Abstract
Umbilical artery blood flow velocity waveforms were compared with placental microvascular pathology on 43 pregnant women in third trimester pregnancies. The populations consisted of 11 pregnancy-induced hypertension, 14 IUGR, 2 diabetes mellitus,
3
hyperthyroidism, 11 pretrem labor preterm rupture of membrane, and 14 cases with normal pregnancy outcome, including 14 cases with multiple complications. The small muscular arterial count was shown to be significantly less in the group with high
systolic/diastolic ratio than that in the group with normal systolic/diastolic ratio(p<0.05). There was also a significant decrease in the small muscular arterial count in groups complicated by pregnancy-induced hypertension and/or IUGR as
compared
to
that in group with normal pregnancy outcome(p<0.05). These findings suggested that Doppler velocimetry may predict the extent of the placental pathology in complicated pregnancies.
